Sydenham book club needs new members

Post by mikej »

We are a small group that meets on the last Wednesday of each month in the Dolphin to discuss a book (!) We formed about 4 years ago but we are now down to only 8 members (50/50 men/women), which is not really sustainable. Ideally we'd like about 6 new people to join us. People have left usually due to moving away from the area.
Each month one member (on a rota) suggests two possible titles, tells us about them from online reviews and those who are present get to vote to decide which one that we will all read.
We usually meet in the Dolphin but occasionally have met at a member's house instead.
If you think you'd like to come along - and we hope that you will - please PM me and I can then give you our title for March (or February if you're keen to join sooner!).

Cheers

Hi.. Can you say a little more about the club? What sort of books, eg. Fiction or non-fiction, how "intellectual" or serious is it? How much beers gets consumed at the Dolphin get-togethers? How do you manage with the Stygian lighting levels if you want to read out a quote? BTW, this is a serious enquiry- I'm looking for a book club to join but I'm certainly not up to Eng Lit degree standard and I tend not to read much fiction, but want to expand my range.

for anyone who wants more information, but doesn't want to send/recieve a pm from Mike...

the book choice varies - we take it in turns to offer up a couple of options, one of which is chosen to be discussed two months later.
we don't have specific rules on the type of book, but we suggest that it's easily available in paperback for a reasonable price (usually suggest <£5) - pretty much anything goes. We are often surprised by books that we wouldn't necessarily have chosen ourselves to read, but which we read because of the book club, which we end up liking - hence few limits on choice.
we meet once a month on a Wednesday night - usually The Dolphin, but we've been elsewhere too.
we discuss the book, sometimes in greater depth than others, there is of course some general gossip and chit chat, as amongst friends who only see each other once a month.
when I attend I usually have at least one beer, sometimes I've had 3.
having finished reading the book shouldn't necessarily stop you from turning up.

If you'd like (even more) information please send Mike a pm.
