I hope that the new Greyhound thrives when it opens after all the talk on this forum!

BTW the ... Firkin was "Fewterer and Firkin" with, I seem to remember, the word fewterer being something to do with greyhounds. Whoever mentioned it has taken me right back to the 90s and my much younger self :?

I think it probably opened about 20/21 years ago and my friends and I loved it! Music, quiz nights, even a New Year's Eve party; can't remember if it was 96 into 97 or 97 into 98. K cider was THE cider to drink (none of that fruity cider or cidre nonsense) and it was all about Blur, Oasis and girl power with The Spice Girls!

WHERE have the years gone?

Sophie
I seem to recall in the last years of opening it was a dive.. Yes was a Firkin pub but not a good one.

I do wish the pub all the best in the future.

it's funny I remember it as being bigger inside, but then again that was 20 years ago...!

is it just ground floor or will there be an upstairs?

Morning
Pat and I from The Sydenham Society had a tour of The Greyhound with the new owners and tweeted a few photos yesterday.
The fit out is going well although, as with most builds, there are a few unexpected surprises which may impact a launch date. They're keen to launch ASAP though, hopefully December as planned.
Their vision for the pub is excellent and they are investing in a quality fit out and already secured some good staff. Recruitment will commence shortly, providing 20 or so jobs which is great news for our area.
Full details of what's coming will be in the next Sydenham Society newsletter but to give you headlines, it will be an open plan pub in an eclectic sympathetic style, serving quality food, will be dog and family friendly and upstairs will be two function / private dining areas.
The owners are extremely excited about opening and very grateful to everybody who has helped the pub get rebuilt, from everyone pushing online such as here and to those campaigning on the streets and phones. It's been a long time coming and they're impressed by our persistence and keenness!!
Watch out for more details on the next newsletter and Twitter...
Have a great day everyone

Sounds great!

And it was good to see some friendly words about the Greyhound in yesterday's Metro:

Ben / Pat,

If you are in touch with the owner please can I suggest that they protect the greyhound statues at the entrance whilst the building work is in progress. I am amazed that they are not protected. I work in construction consulting and this would be a priority requirement on behalf of our client, considering the greyhounds are iconic and integral to the pub. I can see an accident waiting to happen with a burly builder knocking off a nose or an ear.

Or please can you provide the owner's details and I'd be happy to suggest it to them myself.

Many thanks in advance.

Are we likely to get a Christmas night out in the pub this year?

That's what the new owner is aiming for but he has come across a few hitches, as there almost always is. I think it will be worth the wait though.

Its very busy this morning. Lots of workmen (and possibly women) in there. Work has clearly started for the extension.

Are you sure? The wait has been a decade after all. Is it going to have a ceiling like the Sistine Chapel?
Well, it does have a roof. If you're looking up at the ceiling in a pub, it'll be a pretty good advert for their beer cos you'll have drunk too much of it ;)

In further signs of progress:

- The Greyhound now has a holding page for its new website - http://www.thegreyhoundsydenham.co.uk/

- The new operators have taken over the Greyhound Twitter account from the Sydenham Society, with a promise of updates on the refurbishment - https://twitter.com/thegreyhoundsyd

I can almost taste my first pint in the 'new' Greyhound. :D

I hope the new owners will serve beers from our local breweries.

Gypsy Hill - https://gipsyhillbrew.com/
The London Beer Factory - https://www.thelondonbeerfactory.com/
Brockley Brewery - http://brockleybrewery.co.uk/home/
The Inkspot Brewery - https://www.theinkspotbrewery.com
Bullfinch Brewery - http://www.thebullfinchbrewery.co.uk/
Canopy Brewery - http://www.canopybeer.com/

to name a few.....

This will then make it a true pub supporting local breweries.

Why not Tweet them to suggest it?

One person has already Tweeted them to suggest that they sell non-alcoholic beer (presumably in addition to alcoholic beer) and they got a friendly response the same day - see https://twitter.com/TheGreyhoundSyd/sta ... 4538921991 - so they clearly welcome ideas.

And they are busy working on their food and drink menu, so now is the time - see https://twitter.com/bigdannyspencer/sta ... 3636243456

Doubt it - unless they get sponsored by one of those makeover programmes.

Patience. It really is moving forward. That's the point - the speed is secondary. The best days of the old Greyhound were when you could sit outside. That's what I'm really looking forward to. Meanwhile I would organise your Christmas Lunch elsewhere.
