Bell Green Cycle Crossing

The South London Press has a report that Lewisham Council is including Sydenham's dangerous cycle crossing of Southend Lane to Riverlink way as part of eleven cycle highways in the borough:

"A crossing in Pagnell Street in New Cross would be upgraded to a parallel zebra crossing – a type of zebra crossing that cyclists can use as well as pedestrians, as would a crossing at Southend Lane in Sydenham."

However, I can't find anything on the Council website. Can anyone help?

Could this be a reporting error (second of sections highlighted in bold) from the South London Press item that describes the route being developed from Sydenham station - perhaps that should be Lower Sydenham station?

The projects are dependent on the council winning Transport for London (TfL) funding, which it submitted a £2 million bid for in November 2023. It is unlikely Lewisham will be awarded enough cash to begin all the proposed projects, but it hopes to be awarded enough money to start work on some of them.

The council has already won £329,000 in cash from TfL for cycling schemes that are already under construction or in the process of being designed or developed. These include cycle routes between Elverson Road and Catford, as well as between Sydenham railway station and Waterlink Way, as well as a crossing in Brockley Road.

Will trawl through minutes and try to track where these projects are listed or approved.

Can I refer you to the thread 'Bell Green Public Transport improvements'? The Bell Green Neighbourhood Forum's wonderful transport engineer Deone Costley took TfL and Lewisham officers to see these issues. The Waterlink Way to Sydenham Station improvement refers to a new controlled crossing on Perry Rise. Old Sydenham hands will remember that Sainsburys handed over the money for a controlled crossing for Brent Knoll School decades ago. This new crossing will multitask, also protecting cyclists using the route dog-legging across from Priestfield Road.

The proposal makes good sense.

If the s106 monies for that proposal is held by LB Lewisham (amongst circa £2.4m of unexpended funds ingathered from the retail park development), do we know if LBL will proceed with the work as the condition that funding is present is met?

If you look at the Sustainable Development Select Committee meeting on 9th January, the full Active Travel Plan was presented. The Perry Rise crossing is listed at the construction phase, which suggests it's absolutely definite. The Southend Lane crossing is listed at the feasibility phase, so will take a bit longer. It is very high on the list though, officers are extremely keen on it, and I'm very confident it's happening. Lower down on their priorities list is where delivery is uncertain.

It's amazing to get such a quick return on our campaign, thanks to the TfL funding opportunity window. I've been promised an update on where our other requests stand, especially the pedestrian crossings around the gyratory.

As for the s106 money, it has definitely been totted up, but I really hope that the GLA cycling infrastructure fund will pay for the Perry Rise crossing. That would leave the s106 money for the gyratory crossings. I promise that there's zilch chance that we're forgetting about our s106 money, and will make sure that is spent on Bell Green.

Sydenham Road at Bell Green and Kent House Road junctions have been hit overnight by the ULEZ vandals. They moved on from cutting wires or blowing them up to simply angle grind the base of the post.

So good luck if you want to cross the road by foot or bike. And guess who has to pay in chaos and council tax?

Heroes for criminal damage and defying a decision by the democratically elected mayor? If you don't like that you can vote in May to have ULEZ removed. No, it's just gratuitous vandalism spurred on by culture war warriors.

Sorry for the rant but this is so selfish and dangerous and mostly carried on by people who condemn climate change protestors for causing inconvenience. Such hypocrisy.

Heroic would be disabling the cameras, ideally in a subtle way. Spray paint, cutting cables.

Taking out pedestrian crossing points outside a school, leaving the traffic light blocking the pavement, just seems a bit 'look at me' tbh.

except that did not happen in Sydenham. It was in Orpington.

My comment was about heroically objecting to Khanisms.

The injury was in Orpington which should be a reminder that cutting down the crossing light across that murderous Bell Green gyratory to Haseltine School was a stupidly dangerous thing to do in Sydenham.

Because they did escape injury doesn't make a hero out of a vandal.

Objecting to ULEZ is fine. There is a convenient quick way to removing ULEZ. Just elect the Mayoral candidate committed to do it on May 2nd. Which makes that vandalism even more gratuitous.
