Sydenham is part of the Lewisham West & Penge Parliamentary Constituency. Sydenham has been represented at Westminster since 1992 by Jim Dowd for the Labour Party. Jim gained the seat from Conservative replacing Junior Treasury Minister John Maples.

Jim Dowd is a former Councillor and Mayor of Lewisham. Jim may be described as a Tony Blair loyalist and a strong supporter of the war in Iraq.
