This week signs mysteriously appeared reclaiming the High Street for Kirkdale.
Cynics often claim Sydenham is going downhill. Its shopping centre certainly is. The original shopping centre when Sydenham was a village on the outskirts of london was located around what we now know as Kirkdale and Dartmouth Road. As the town grew the main shopping are moved down to Sydenham Road. In the last couple of decades the coming of the Sainsbury SavaCentre and adjoining retail park now has most SE26 shopping in Lower Sydenham. Where next?
A revival of Kirkdale? Midway between Forest Hill & ‘Mid-Syd’ but without the appalling traffic issues? It has cornered the market in shops that lie between the antique and straight secondhand. It sells pianos, it has a good restaurant, new cafe and plenty of vacant retail units for further development.
It also has a not so fine collection of fast food outlets. It is down to two pubs with The Windmill likely to become a Sainsbury Local is the Sydenham Society fail in their campaign to keep it as a community asset.
Kirkdale campaigns appear to be dogged by controversy. The Windmill is one example. The re-branding to Kirkdale Village is another. But instead of arguing someone has seized a paint brush and done the deed. Do you approve?
There is a thread on it here: http://sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11067
