The Windmill was reported shut and shuttered earlier today. This appears to be the end for the former Wetherspoon establishment in upper Kirkdale. It follows the closure of The Woodman opposite (now Wooster & Stock Estate Agency) and the Duke up Sydenham Wells Road. This just leaves Foxies (formerly the Fox & Hounds) and The Bricklayers around the corner in Dartmouth Road.
The closure comes at the end of a controversial fight by members of the Sydenham Society to keep it open as a community asset. It will now be let to Sainsbury as a local store. More in these Town Forum threads:

* Comprehensive CCTV system installed.

The pub had a substantial recent refurbishment to accompany its change in name – a nod to famous cricketer WG Grace who lived just round the corner down Lawrie Park Road. It was very popular smoking pub – although of late smokers were banished to the front step. Though no more. This marks four pubs in a line that Sydenham has lost (Two Half’s, Pavillion, Greyhound and Windmill). Two are now to be small supermarkets. Will the other two come back into use?
